Pet Grief and Loss

Honouring the Bond: Pet Loss & Unspoken Grief

When you lose an animal family member, you aren’t just losing a pet - you are losing a core part of your heart, your daily life, and your family.

When an animal family member dies, or when you are facing difficult end-of-life decisions, the heartbreak can be profound. Our animals are woven into our lives, holding a place in our homes and hearts that no other relationship can replicate.

Whether you are currently navigating a difficult health diagnosis and end-of-life decisions, or you are grieving a loss that has already occurred, you are welcome here.

Why Pet Loss Feels So Lonely

There can be a very lonely weight to losing an animal family member. When a human relative passes away, people drop off meals, send cards, and check in. But when an animal family member dies, the world expects you to return to work and carry on as if nothing happened.

You might be met with well-meaning but painful dismissals like, “It was just a pet.” These comments erase the reality that a beloved member of your family is gone. They leave you feeling like you have to hide your tears, defend your heartbreak, or grieve in secret. I want you to know: Your pain is real, your loss is profound, your grief is valid and your love for them matters.

How I Can Help

The Heartbreak we sit with together:
Grieving an animal family member comes with specific, aching moments that others often overlook. In our sessions, you don’t have to explain why it hurts so much. I make space for:

  • The silence in the house: The sudden, painful absence of their paws on the floor, their spot on the couch, the empty food dish, or the quiet doorway when you come home.

  • The weight of end-of-life decisions: Processing the agonizing guilt, second-guessing, and heartbreak that can follow health struggles, medical choices or euthanasia.

  • Losing your safe space: Grieving the one presence in your life who offered unconditional love, zero judgment.

  • The Unseen Routine: Adjusting to a daily schedule that was built around them.

How we walk through this together:
Grieving an animal family member takes time, and there is no timeline you need to follow. I am here to offer a warm, steady space where your loss is recognized and respected. Together we can:

  • Give you room to share the hard moments that others might not understand

  • Find gentle ways to help you process your emotions and the exhaustion and stress of the loss

  • Keep their memory alive and honour the unique bond you shared in a way that feels comforting and true to your relationship with them.
